Blogging has become hugely popular because it means you can write once, and get paid over and over again.
Your blog goes to work for you, earning you money while you're fast asleep, even when you're on vacation.
Every minute you put into blogging is an investment in your future: you're building income security for you, and for your family.
One of my friends is now a keen blogger. She calls her life a "permanent vacation". She blogs for 45 minutes after she's dropped her children off at school, then for another 40 minutes at a café, while she's having lunch. In the evening, she checks on her blogs before she goes to sleep…
She tells me that aside from an on-going income, the best gift her blogs have given her is the gift of time.
I tried to turn her on to blogging for years, but she could never see the point. Then she lost her day job. She started blogging, and has never looked back. Now she regrets all those wasted years she might have blogged, but didn't.
Trading your time for dollars is painful, I've been there
I know that trading time for money is a painful experience. When you sell your time, it's gone for good. When my children were small, I had a day job, and I wrote in my "spare" time. Since I had no spare time, that writing time was carved out of my sleeping time.
That was in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and blogging was years away. Nevertheless, I did understand how "licensing" works. I was writing novels, and I knew that once a novel was published, it would keep on earning for me for years.
Blogging is instant publishing. You write, and write some more, and that writing keeps earning for you. It's security.
You can STOP trading your time for dollars
Your goal as a writer should be to create as many profit centers for your writing as you can. The more income streams you have, the more income.
Makes sense, doesn't it?
When I discovered blogging, a decade ago, my writer and business friends thought I was crazy. "You're writing for free!" they yelled.
I won't say that I had a cunning plan at that stage, because I certainly didn't. I blogged because I loved it. It thrilled me that I could write, hit the "Publish" button, and have readers, instantly.
My blogging grew. It started as a hobby, but soon turned into an income stream. I used blogs to promote newsletters I was writing, and to sell my own and others' products.
For a time, I blogged for a company which set up blogs for businesses. In 2004, I was making great money, writing several blog posts for companies, each week, on a six-month contract. (You can still do that today, of course, but be aware that you're trading time for dollars.)
I woke up, you can too
In 2006, I woke up, and decided to create a blog empire – my own blogging income streams. In those days, setting up blogs was a struggle. Today, it's much easier, because the tools have evolved, and what took a couple of weeks now takes 30 minutes.
While developing my blogs, I tinkered, and finally evolved my own "money" blogging method, which I teach in Lazy Rich Blogger.
I've never looked back. I grow my blogs, and my income grows. Once a blog's been set up, it keeps on making money. As you'll see, some of my blogs haven't been touched in a couple of years, so it's not as if I'm a blogging dynamo… I teach a "lazy" way of blogging. :-)
